Some people seem to be born with certain skill, or an affinity for a particular vocation. Susan Boyce has been making art since childhood, assembling found natural objects into collages, drawing with ink and charcoal, and painting with acrylic, water colors and oils. She has a BA in art education from West Liberty State College near Wheeling WV. In college she began to experiment with ceramic sculpture and woven and knotted fiber. She began participating in art and craft festivals in 1975 with hand spinning and vegetable dyed weaving. She learned to throw pottery from friends met at craft shows and continued to develop and refine the skill through workshops and seminars with many of the outstanding potters in the country as well as classes at Cleveland Institute of Art.

In the mid 80’s she worked as summer workshop assistant to Charles Counts at Rising Fawn, Georgia. She has been potting steadily since 1983.

Over the years she has developed a unique approach to an old technique called sgraffito, which involves scraping or cutting through one layer of clay to reveal a different color underneath.

Susan's distinctive pottery combines the two and three dimensional art forms. Her style has evolved over the years, settling on wildlife drawings, celebrating the beauty of the animal kingdom and encouraging an appreciation of it. She features mostly wildlife pottery of North American species such as the wolf, horse, bison, cougar, bear, owl and chickadee – with the occasional elephant or whale for variety.
